Mirrorless vs DSLRequipment
The core difference is the mirror: DSLRs view optically through a mirror; mirrorless cameras preview electronically straight off the sensor.
A DSLR bounces light off a mirror into an optical viewfinder (OVF); a mirrorless camera shows a live electronic preview (EVF or screen) from the sensor. Mirrorless wins on size, eye-detection autofocus, silent shooting, and what-you-see-is-what-you-get exposure; DSLRs counter with no-lag optical viewing, longer battery life, and vast used-lens libraries. For most new buyers mirrorless is the forward-looking choice — but a good DSLR still takes excellent photos.
Use this when
- Action & wildlife AF: Edge: mirrorless
- Battery life: Edge: DSLR
- Cheap used lenses: Edge: DSLR
Common mistake: Thinking one is simply 'better' — they trade off; match the choice to how you shoot.
