Help & FAQ

Quick answers about how ShootSm.art works. Search below, or ask the coach anything about your gear.

Getting started

What is ShootSm.art?

ShootSm.art is an AI photography coach. Tell it your camera, lens, and what you're shooting, and it gives you exact settings and plain-language advice — plus tools to match a look, fix a test shot, learn the fundamentals, and plan your gear.

Do I need an account?

You can read the glossary, settings guides, and problem fixes without signing in. To use the AI tools (coach, match, fix) and save anything, create a free account — no card required.

Is it really free?

Yes. The free plan isn't a trial — it stays free. You get a daily allowance of coaching, photo matching, and shot fixes, plus the full glossary, settings guides, and basic calculators. Pro raises the limits dramatically and unlocks the power features.

What cameras and lenses are supported?

A broad database of camera bodies and lenses across the major brands. Pick yours in any tool and the advice is tailored to your sensor size, focal lengths, and apertures.

The tools

What does the Coach do?

Ask it anything about settings or technique for your gear and your scene, and it answers with specific recommendations. On Pro you can keep the conversation going with follow-up questions, and it can draw on your Shot Log and Journal to match how you shoot. You can also hand any shot or note straight to the coach with its details pre-filled.

What is Match a Look?

Upload a reference photo and we analyze it, then tell you the settings and approach to get a similar result with your own gear.

What is Fix a Shot?

Upload a JPEG straight from the camera. We read its EXIF — the settings you actually used — and tell you exactly what to change. Pair it with the Common Problems guides if you're not sure what went wrong.

What are Recipes?

Pre-built settings starting points for common shots (birds in flight, window-light portraits, sunset landscapes, and more), adapted to your gear. Pro members can save their own and build new ones from scratch.

What calculators are included?

Free: depth of field and a sun/golden-hour planner. Pro adds advanced calculators — ND filter exposure, astro (500-rule) shutter, flash distance, and time-lapse — all instant, no AI involved.

Pro membership

What do I get with Pro?

Much higher daily limits on coaching, match and fix (far beyond Free), with follow-up conversation, coaching that learns your style from your shots and notes, every Pro recipe plus your own custom recipes, printable offline cheat sheets, advanced calculators, a gear inventory with one-click insurance PDF, the community library, a Shot Log with cloud photo storage, CSV export and shoot analysis, shot history, unlimited gear kits, and our most capable AI model powering the coach, look matches and shot fixes.

How much is Pro?

There's a monthly and an annual plan — the annual plan is discounted and comes with a free trial. See the Pricing page for current numbers.

What do the daily limits mean on Free?

Each AI tool (coach, match, fix) has its own daily allowance that resets every 24 hours. Pro raises these dramatically — to high fair-use levels (around 100 coaching questions and 50+ photo analyses a day) that are far beyond Free and enough for any normal use. The generous ceiling just protects everyone from runaway abuse.

Can I cancel or switch plans?

Any time. Switch between monthly and annual whenever you like, and cancel in one click — cancelling simply stops the subscription from renewing, so you keep Pro until the end of the period you already paid for and won't be billed again.

How do I manage my subscription?

Go to Account → Billing. From there you can upgrade, change plans, update your card, or cancel through the secure billing portal.

Shot Log, Journal, photos & privacy

What's the difference between the Shot Log and the Journal?

The Shot Log is for your shots: drop in a photo, we read its EXIF (settings, time, place), and you add a note on what worked and what to change next time — a learning loop that builds your shot history. The Journal is for field notes you come back to: gear to buy, places to scout, subjects, and ideas. Both are searchable.

What is “Analyze a shoot”?

A Pro Shot Log tool: drop in a whole shoot and we read every frame's EXIF into your History & trends (focal lengths, ISO, activity) without storing the photos or cluttering your log. Pick the scene, then rate each frame nailed it / usable / missed right there — that feeds your insights and tunes the coach in one pass. Promote any standout into a full Shot Log entry to keep its photo.

How does the app learn what works for me?

Rate your shots — nailed it, usable, or missed — and we work out which settings actually work for you: your keeper rate by shutter and ISO, and the typical settings of your keepers for each scene (your “what works for you”). On Pro, your History shows these insights and the coach starts its recommendations from your proven keeper settings. Rating is free; the insights and coach-tuning are Pro.

What's the Field Guide?

A complete, printable photography handbook — the universal fundamentals (free) plus, on Pro, a version tuned to you: your camera's terms and specs (crop reach, clean ISO, sync, burst, IBIS), how to set it up for action, your saved kits and recipes, and the settings that actually work for you. Open it, print it or save it as a PDF for the field.

Does it match my gear automatically when I log a shot?

Yes — when you log a shot we read the photo's camera and lens from the EXIF and auto-match one of your saved gear kits, falling back to your default kit. You can always pick a different kit yourself.

Can I ask the coach about a specific shot or note?

Yes. In your Shot Log or Journal, hit “Ask the coach” on any entry and it opens the coach with the details (settings, your note) pre-filled, so you can ask what to change next time.

Are my photos private?

Yes. Your Shot Log, Journal and photos are yours and are never shared or made public unless you explicitly publish a cheat sheet or recipe to the community library. Coaching that uses them is opt-in.

Do you strip metadata from my uploads?

When you store a photo we strip its embedded EXIF/GPS metadata, so location and camera-serial data aren't retained with the stored image. The settings we show you are kept separately in your account.

Can I export my data?

Pro members can export their Shot Log to CSV — a portable backup you can open in any spreadsheet. Cheat sheets can be printed or saved as PNG.

Does the free plan store photos?

On Free we keep your notes and the EXIF we read, but not the photo files. Cloud photo storage is a Pro feature.

Offline, app & account

Can I install ShootSm.art as an app?

Yes — it's a Progressive Web App. On phone or desktop, use your browser's “Install” or “Add to Home Screen” option to get an app icon and a full-screen experience.

Does it work offline?

Your saved cheat sheets are available offline once you've opened them, so you can pull up your settings in the field with no signal. AI tools need a connection.

How do I change my email or sign out?

Visit Account settings. Signing out also clears any locally cached content on that device.
