Framing (Natural Frames)general

Using elements in the scene — a doorway, branches, an arch — to frame the subject within the photo.

Shooting through a foreground element that surrounds the subject adds depth, directs attention inward, and gives a sense of place. Windows, arches, overhanging branches, and tunnels all work. Keep the frame darker or softer than the subject so the eye still lands where you want.

Use this when

  • Add depth and focus: shoot through an arch / branches

Common mistake: A frame so busy or bright it competes with the subject.
