Focus Stackingtechnical

Combining several frames focused at different distances into one image that's sharp front-to-back.

When depth of field is too shallow to get everything sharp — common in macro and some landscapes — you take a series of shots, shifting focus a little each time, then blend them in software so each part uses its sharpest frame. Use a tripod and a still subject; many cameras can shoot the sequence automatically (focus bracketing).

Use this when

  • Macro, product, deep landscapes: stack 5-30 frames on a tripod

Common mistake: Trying to stack a moving subject or handholding — the frames won't align.
