Macro Photographyequipment

Extreme close-up photography that renders small subjects life-size or larger on the sensor.

A true macro lens reaches 1:1 magnification (the subject is projected at actual size on the sensor) with a close minimum focusing distance. Up close, depth of field becomes razor-thin — often just millimeters — so you stop down to f/8–f/16, add light (the lens is nearly touching the subject), and may stack several frames focused at different depths. Great for insects, flowers, products, and textures.

Use this when

  • Insects, flowers, products: macro lens, f/8-f/16, extra light

Common mistake: Shooting macro wide open and getting a sliver of the subject in focus.
