Three-Point Lightinggeneral

The classic studio setup: a key light, a softer fill, and a back/rim light to separate the subject.

The key light is your main source, placed off to one side at ~45° for shape and shadow. The fill (a second, weaker light or a reflector) opens up those shadows so they're not too dark. The back light (or rim/hair light) behind the subject traces a bright edge that lifts them off the background. Vary the key-to-fill ratio for dramatic (high contrast) or soft (even) looks.

Use this when

  • Portraits, interviews, product: key + fill + back
  • Dramatic look: strong key, little fill

Common mistake: Flat, shadowless light from putting the key straight on, head-height.
