Rim Lightgeneral

A light behind the subject that traces a bright outline, separating them from the background.

Placing a light (the sun low behind them, or a backlight) skimming the subject's edges creates a glowing rim that lifts them off a dark background and adds depth and drama. Pair it with a touch of fill on the front so the shadow side isn't pure black.

Use this when

  • Backlit portraits, golden hour: sun low and behind for an edge glow

Common mistake: No fill, so the front of the subject falls to a silhouette by accident.
