Polarizing Filter (CPL)equipment
A rotating filter that cuts glare and reflections and deepens skies — an effect you can't replicate in editing.
A circular polarizer reduces reflections off water, glass, and wet leaves, makes blue skies richer and clouds pop, and boosts saturation. You rotate it to dial the effect while watching the viewfinder. It costs about 1–2 stops of light, and on ultra-wide lenses the sky can darken unevenly. Genuinely the one filter effect software can't fake.
Use this when
- Skies, foliage, water: rotate for max effect, ~90° from the sun
Common mistake: Leaving it on in low light, losing 2 stops for no benefit.
