Monopodequipment

A single-leg support that takes the weight of a long lens and steadies you, while staying mobile.

Where a tripod locks you in place, a monopod is a fast-moving compromise: it bears the weight of a heavy telephoto and removes some shake, while letting you pan and reposition quickly. Favored by wildlife and sports shooters with big lenses. It won't enable multi-second exposures like a tripod, but it saves your arms and sharpens handheld tele shots.

Use this when

  • Sports / wildlife with a big lens: monopod for weight + mobility

Common mistake: Expecting monopod stability to match a tripod for long exposures.
