Rolling Shutterequipment
A skew or wobble in fast-moving subjects caused by the sensor being read top-to-bottom rather than all at once.
With an electronic shutter the sensor is read out progressively, line by line, over a few milliseconds. If the subject or camera moves fast during that readout, different parts of the frame capture slightly different moments — making propellers bend, fast cars lean, and quick pans wobble. Faster 'stacked' sensors reduce it; switching to the mechanical shutter avoids it.
Use this when
- Props, fast pans, sports: Use mechanical shutter
- Still subjects: Electronic is fine
Common mistake: Using a silent electronic shutter for fast action without realizing it caused the skew.
